Respite

Dependable short-term support so family caregivers can step away knowing their loved one is in steady hands.

A vibrant group of adults cheering together during a community activity.

What it is

Respite is planned or as-needed care provided in the home or community, giving the primary caregiver time to rest, work, attend appointments, or simply recharge. Care is delivered by a trained Direct Support Professional matched to the individual.

Who it's for

  • Family caregivers who need scheduled time away or coverage for unexpected events.
  • Individuals whose plans include respite hours through NJ DDD.
  • Households balancing caregiving with work, school, or the needs of other family members.

What to expect

We meet with the family first to understand routines, preferences, and any safety considerations. The same DSP is scheduled wherever possible, so the relationship — and the routine — stays consistent.

How it's funded

Respite hours are authorized through the NJ DDD Supports Program or Community Care Program (Medicaid waiver) and set in the individual's ISP.

How to start

Reach out to our intake line or have your Support Coordinator send a referral. We'll confirm hours, scheduling, and a match as soon as possible.
